Up/Down Tennis. The competitive sport of up/down tennis is two players on one side of the net competing against two players on the other side. Each team consists of one player in a wheelchair and the other is able bodied. The wheelchair player can play the ball after two bounces; the able bodied player uses the standard one bounce rule. This rule is known, as the “Two Bounce Rule” is consistent throughout all formats of Wheelchair Tennis and is recognized by the United States Tennis Association. The IWTA board organizes, runs, and sponsors three separate leagues of up/down tennis through out the year. Members meet and vote on locations, costs, and all applicable decisions to organize the league. The summer and fall leagues are devoted to outdoor play and held on a weekly basis. The winter league is held weekly at either the Boise State University Bubbles or at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. Members of the IWTA, upon payment of the $25 annual dues may participate on all programs sponsored by the IWTA. There are no extra fees for each of The Up/Down tennis leagues. The IWTA arranges for the facility of play, pays for the court rental, provide drinks and tennis balls. At the end or the year (November) wheelchair and able bodied tennis players from Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Oregon and Washington travel to Las Vegas for a sectional Up/Down tennis Tournament sponsored by the Intermountain Tennis Association (segment of the USTA). The IWTA allocates financial support to any of its members for travel costs, hotel costs, and tournament entry fees. The organization spends about 70% of it’s time on this activity.
